Slime! Quick, Easy and Kid-friendly

Slime! Quick, Easy and Kid-friendly

Slime is a great sensory activity for children.  A lot of slime recipes require the use of Borax, glues or soap which can be off limits for younger children who like to taste test everything.  This recipe is quick and simple to make and best of all, is completely safe if your little one wants to have a taste.

The only ingredient you might need to purchase is psyllium husks or psyllium powder.  Metamucil has psyllium as an active ingredient so could be used as well.  Psyllium is a type of fibre and therefore is useful in keeping you regular so while I wouldn’t encourage the kids to eat a lot of it, it shouldn’t matter if they do.  You can buy it from a health shop or the health food section of your local supermarket.  Psyllium powder is supposedly best to use so if you can’t find it, just buy the psyllium husks and blitz to create a finer powder.  I usually forget that step so end up using the husks and it works just as well.

What you need:

  • 1T psyllium powder / husks
  • 1C water
  • food colouring
  • microwave safe bowl

Instructions

  • Mix water, food colouring and psyllium in a microwave safe bowl
  • Microwave on high for 3 minutes
  • Allow to cool
  • If you want a more rubbery texture, microwave again for another minute or 2 and repeat this step until you get the consistency you desire.
  • When the mixture starts to boil over, its usually a good rubbery consistency

Variations
  • add glitter for a bit of extra sparkle
  • use metamucil for a flavoured slime
  • try a non cook method, just mixing the water and the psyllium and watch it absorb
  • I have heard of some people adding milo to it but haven’t tried this yet. I guess it depends if you want them to play with it, or eat it.

Store it in an air tight container.  It will eventually go mouldy but this won’t happen as quickly if you keep it in the fridge.  It should last for a couple of weeks, but check it before you give it to your kids to play with.
